It is with great sadness in my heart that I announce the passing of my mother, Mary Carlyle affectionately known as Gramma Mary. She passed peacefully in her sleep April 6, 2024. The saving grace for me is that God took her quickly and without pain.
I want to extend an enormous THANK YOU to Rose Reid, my mother’s care giver for almost 2 years. She took care of her as if she were her own mother and I love her so much for that. I was always at ease about my mother because I knew she was getting the best care possible.
Mary graduated from Oxnard High in 1943. She worked at Pt. Mugu base for many years. When she married Jim Carlyle, they moved to Sacramento and bought a bar. They lived there for a couple of years and moved back. She then got a job for the county, where she retired and I heard she was quite the cut-up at work and people enjoyed her personality. When it came to her family, she never hesitated to give. Christmas was always extra with the mountain of gifts she put under the tree. Her personality was quite different with her fiery spirit, she was always cracking jokes. We enjoyed it very much and she made us laugh a lot. She volunteered at SCES serving lunch to the kids for years. She always enjoyed being around them and loved it when they called her “Gramma Mary.”
She leaves behind to honor her memory: daughter Sandra Peña (Jess); Grandson Jess Peña; Granddaughter Caryn Sanchez; great grandson Dustin Sanchez (Lisette); great granddaughters Maya Sanchez and Isabelle Sanchez; nephews Jack Willard (Tina), Robert Willard, Michael Willard (Susan); and niece Kimberly Soto (Danny). She was preceded in death by her mother Encarnacion Perez; brother Bobby Perez; and sister Lola Willard (Virgil).
Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday April 23 at Reardon Funeral Home, 511 North A St., Oxnard. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday April 24 at Santa Clara Church, Oxnard.
